BioVisionCenter

Scientific Competence Centers & Academic Networks and Initiatives

The BioVisionCenter is a Technology Platform of the University of Zurich dedicated to advanced computational bioimage analysis relying on state-of-the-art machine vision methods. Our mission is to act as a bridge between life and computer scientists: we develop user-friendly and open-source computational tools incorporating the latest algorithms, empowering biologists to use state-of-the-art methods to quantitatively analyse their bioimage data. We are an interdisciplinary team of experts in computer vision, computational biology, and machine learning.

Our ongoing main project is the expansion of the Fractal framework (https://fractal-analytics-platform.github.io/) into a general-purpose computational infrastructure. In collaboration with research groups in Zurich and beyond, we drive research and development in quantitative analysis for terabytes-large image datasets. In training courses and lecture series, we also train researchers of all backgrounds to make the most of their bioimage data through automated quantitative analysis. Being the first academic platform fully dedicated to computational bioimage analysis in Switzerland, we also champion FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reproducible) approaches to bioimage analysis both nationally and internationally.

In addition to offering help to deploy, administer, and onboard users on the Fractal framework, we also provide expert support in deep-learning-based image analysis and large-scale image processing as a service. We are open to research collaborations in which our expertise may be needed to carry out state-of-the-art image analysis methods R&D.
